The 10 Golden Rules of Safety

Hello, Dean Lowery here, Safety Officer at CNI Manufacturing. Today, I am excited to talk about one of the core values that drives our company—our unwavering commitment to safety. It's this very commitment that has helped us achieve an industry record for safety and excellence. In a world where every second counts, keeping each other safe is not just a policy; it's a mission.

At CNI Manufacturing, safety isn't just another box to check—it's woven into the very fabric of our operations. General Norman Schwarzkopf once said, “The only place where success comes before work and sweat is in the dictionary.” On the factory floor, it’s the collective dedication and vigilance of our amazing team that truly defines our success. With this in mind, I’d like to introduce you to our 10 Golden Rules of Safety—essential guidelines designed to promote a safe working environment and to prevent accidents at every turn.

  1. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): It's essential to always wear the right PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves, aprons, and earplugs. These protect you from the potential hazards you might encounter during the day.

  2. Follow Safe Lifting Techniques: When it comes to lifting heavy objects, always bend your knees, keep your back straight, and lift with your legs. These simple adjustments can prevent strains and injuries.

  3. Maintain a Clean Workspace: We all know how easy it is for things to get cluttered. Keeping your area organized minimizes the risk of trips, slips, and falls, keeping everyone safe.

  4. Take Regular Breaks: I often see someone skipping breaks to get ahead, but fatigue can impair judgment and increase the likelihood of accidents. Always take your breaks to rest and recharge.

  5. Lockout/Tagout: This is one of our most crucial yet often overlooked safety rules. Always follow lockout/tagout procedures to prevent unexpected equipment startup during maintenance or repair work.

  6. Report Hazards Promptly: If you notice a potential hazard, always remember: “If You See Something, Say Something.” Immediately report any risks to your supervisor or safety officer to prevent accidents before they happen.

  7. Use Tools and Equipment Properly: Make it a point to familiarize yourself with the correct usage of tools and equipment to avoid mishaps.

  8. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Situational awareness is key. Keep a vigilant eye on your environment and pay attention to what’s going on around you.

  9. Never Bypass Safety Devices: Safety devices are there for a reason. Never bypass them as doing so can lead to serious injuries.

  10. Stop Work Authority: We each have the power to stop work if there's a safety concern. Don't stand by and let harm occur.

The Golden Rules of Safety are centered around awareness, responsibility, communication, and respect. They’re not just workplace guidelines; they’re principles that can deeply empower individuals in all areas of life. By adhering to these rules, we ensure the safety and well-being of not just ourselves but of everyone on the team.

Let’s continue to uphold our standard of safety excellence here at CNI Manufacturing, not just today, but every day. Remember, when it comes to safety, every action counts. Let's keep making each day a safe day.

    Stay safe and vigilant,

    Dean Lowery
